Supporting the next generation of nurses

Barb Hiatt

Barb Hiatt '78

Barb Hiatt '78 has designated a significant gift in her will to support the future creation of an endowed chair in nursing at Saint Martin's University.

An Air Force veteran, retired IT professional and active alumna for many years, Barb is now the current chair of Saint Martin's National Alumni Board. In her volunteer role, Barb has learned of the needs of the University and built lasting relationships with members of the Abbey, faculty and staff, students and fellow alumni.

When Barb learned Saint Martin's University would be adding a four-year Bachelor of Nursing program, she wanted to do something to help. She decided a gift in her estate was the best option for her.

Barb's goal is for her gift to fund an endowed chair in nursing in honor of her mother, Joan Stout. Her mother was a nursing educator, first as an instructor at Tacoma General Hospital and later, after obtaining her bachelor's and master's degrees, a professor. Her first position was as a full professor at the University of Alexandria in Egypt, and she later went on to have a long career with the Veterans Administration as a nursing supervisor.

Through her estate, Barb will be able to fulfill her dream of honoring her mother's legacy as a nurse and educator, and support the Saint Martin's nursing program and future nursing educators who will be teaching the next generation of nurses in the South Sound and beyond.

A gift in your estate can help you reach your charitable goals and support future Saint Martin's students. To learn more, contact Nate Peters, MBA at NPeters@stmartin.edu or (360) 438-4367.
